The whole world increasingly calls for the truthful solution with cause-oriented approach to tackling chronic diseases that dominate figures of mortality, morbidity, disability, and unnecessary human suffering and compromised health-span. It has been scientifically established that lifestyle is the determinant of health and disease. The root cause of chronic diseases was found to lie in adverse lifestyles the individuals and families choose on their daily basis that include: physical inactivity, unhealthy eating, poor sleep, drug abuse, stress, poor mindstyle, poor social relationship, etc.
However, the growing number of studies show that the practice to undo those disease-inducing lifestyles through lifestyle modification or change can prevent, treat, and even reverse lifestyle-related chronic diseases while choice of salutary lifestyle can promote health and wellness, adding more healthy years to live life. Among numerous health and medical science literature including luminary healthcare providers’ proven reports, lifestyle intervention or lifestyle treatment is effective as much as or sometimes more than the efficacy of medications and procedures in treating and reversing chronic diseases including but not limited to : Cardiovascular Diseases (e.g. JAMA 1998; JAMA 2003; Circulation 2004;), Prostate Cancer (e.g. Proc Natl Acad Sci 2008), Telomere (e.g. Lancet Oncol. 2013), Diabetes (e.g. N Eng J Med. 2002; Diabetologia 2011; JAMA 2012), Obesity (e.g. Cell 2017; Epub 2017; JAMA 2018; Front Endocrinol 2018), Depression (e.g.), Alzheimer’s’ Disease (e.g. ).
To make truly successful on achieving positive health and solving negative diseases, it is imperative for both healthcare providers and healthcare consumers (or patients) to adopt, integrate, and practice Lifestyle Medicine (LM) that uses therapeutic lifestyle approach as first-line therapy in preventing, treating, and reversing chronic diseases and promoting health and wellness and longevity among individuals, families, and communities as defined by JAMA (2010 ). While LM was initiated by ACLM (American College of LM), in 21st century, LM has been the most rapidly growing as a branch of evidence-based medicine at the globe.
Keeping aligned with LM Principles and Missions, back in 2014, we founded ASLM (Asian Society of LM) and have devoted to striving LM Movement in Asia. While our volunteer services in this journey of LM Movement for our Asian’s sake including our own country’s, we have just shed its light of truthful cause-oriented approach of LM to Asia healthcare community and individuals’ life. When one is incapable of turning the tide of lifestyle-associated chronic diseases that account for the leading killers for human life, as healthcare professionals, we together can help our Asian’s health and healthcare to be better off from multifaceted medical errors, cost burdens, and misleading healthy life by incorporating and implementing LM into medical education, clinical process, research work, and community service.
