Three important pillars of Lifestyle Medicine are
exercise & fitness; nutrition & diet;
restoring & stress-relieving sleep.
A neat saying is: “we need to eat less, move more, worry less & love more.” The average office worker spends 9.5 hrs of sitting daily which may be killing us.
We need to move more: try to stand up & move for 5 minutes every hour. Sone unique innovations: using stand-up desks, giving lectures from a treadmill, teaching 10-12 y children, especially girls, to just jump down from their chairs 10 times a day, resulting in stronger bones; early osteoporosis prevention. Other schools are giving 15 m per day for all students & staff to get outside and walk/run around the school.
Being aware of how eating certain foods can impact our health is the first step towards a better diet. Vitamins go beyond food! Just standing up after sitting for a long time= “Vitamin Exercise.” Digestion begins in the mouth. Chewing the food well is where an intrinsic factor in the saliva begins digestion of Vitamin B12. B12 pills should not be swallowed but put under the tongue for direct absorption into the bloodstream.
Eat less quantity but more quality. Home-cooking is cheaper and healthier than typical restaurant fare. Restorative sleep is one of the best ways to manage the ever-increasing stress in our lives. Sleep is so important to recharge our energy banks. 6-7 hrs of good sleep is so important to help us avoid overeating; avoid dementia and Alzheimer’s disease as well as heart attacks.
