Smoking tobacco is the single most preventable cause of death for public health as 7 million people worldwide die every year from tobacco smoke, 6 million+ from 1st hand smoking and 890,000 from 2nd hand smoke.80% of the 1.1 billion smokers in the world are from middle- & low-income countries. Half of the smokers will suffer premature death from smoking. Every cigarette shortens life by 5 min.Smokers need help to quit. The Five-day Plan (FDP) to stop smoking has been conducted worldwide for over 50 years.
In over a period of 12 years, I have conducted 24 smoking cessation programs based on the FDP with over 500 participants at Pacific Health Education Center, Bakersfield, California. Our success rate after 1 year was 25%. My fellow-speaker, Dr. Marshall Hollingsead said, “Tobacco hurts every cell in the body.”
Smokers can stop smoking by preparing to quit smoking, learn the 6 ways to cope with cravings and the group support of an FDP will help double the chance of success.
The 1st step—teach smokers to prepare to quit by making a firm decision, saying 200 times/day: “I have decided to stop smoking.”
